Mardon Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire doesn't announce itself with fanfare, and that's rather the appeal. Mardon Hill rises to a modest 168 metres near Boston, which in a county famous for its flatness counts as proper dramatic terrain. The walk up takes minutes rather than hours, but the view across the Fenland makes it worthwhile - on a clear day you can see right across to the Wash and beyond.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Wood Farm Camping, New Farm Holidays, Waites Farm Glamping, or The Layby Lincs are all within five miles - and fancy a leg-stretch that doesn't demand half your afternoon. Families with younger kids will manage it without complaint. Walkers won't be challenged, but it's a solid addition to a ramble through the area rather than a destination in itself.

The real draw is the perspective it gives you on Lincolnshire's landscape. From down at sea level you don't quite grasp how vast and open this county is until you climb somewhere like this. Go on a breezy day - the exposure means wind gets a proper hold up there. Boston itself, just four miles away, offers pubs and tea stops if you need them afterwards. Free to visit, naturally. Allow 45 minutes including the walk and a sit-down at the top. Not life-changing, but a solid bit of local exploration.
