Walking into Keal Carr, you're swallowed by woodland that feels properly isolated despite being barely five miles from Boston. This is fenland forest - the trees are mature and dense, the ground soft underfoot, and the sense of having stumbled away from everything rather genuine.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination with bells and whistles. You'll find paths threading through the trees, plenty of bird life if you're paying attention, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you bothered leaving home. No visitor centre, no café, no play equipment - just wood.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. If your kids are the type who'll sprint ahead and come back exhausted, they'll have a decent time. Younger children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes or so. History buffs won't find much - this is about the walking and the atmosphere, not the backstory.

Come in spring or early autumn when the light filters through properly and you're not battling midges or mud. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander without rushing. Admission appears free, though facilities are basic.

It works well as a morning stop if you're based at Wood Farm Camping or The Layby Lincs nearby - gives you a proper stretch without eating the whole day. Pair it with a walk around the town itself for a rounded half-day. Not essential, but solid value if you're staying in the area and fancy getting away from the flat fenland for an hour.
