St Drostan's

The ruins of St Drostan's Kirk sit quietly on the Aberdeenshire coast, a few miles outside Fraserburgh. It's one of those places that catches you off guard - easy to miss if you're not looking, but oddly compelling once you're there. The stone walls are what remain of a medieval church, though the site's roots go back further than that, to Drostan himself, an early saint with links to this corner of the northeast.

Walking around the ruins gives you a proper sense of how isolated this must have felt centuries ago. The setting matters more than the remains themselves - windswept, honest, with views toward the coast that remind you why someone would choose to build a place of worship here in the first place. There's no fence, no gift shop, no interpretive boards explaining everything. You just stand there and work it out yourself.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth the detour, especially if you're camping nearby at Down On The Farm or one of the other sites within a few miles. It won't take long - twenty minutes maximum - so don't expect to spend a morning here. Best visited on a clear day when the light's decent enough to photograph the stonework properly. Check locally in Fraserburgh before you go, as opening access can be variable. Pair it with a walk along the Aberdeenshire coast or a visit to nearby attractions to make a proper outing of it rather than treating it as a standalone stop.
