Hill of Turlundie

The Hill of Turlundie rises out of the Aberdeenshire landscape near Fraserburgh like something you'd walk past without thinking twice - until you actually climb it. From the summit, the Moray Firth spreads out in front of you, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Banff coast. It's a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll, but nothing that demands serious fell-walking kit.

This is the sort of place walkers come to tick off rather than tourists hunting for heritage sites or photo opportunities. The views matter more than any building or historical plaque. You're looking at working countryside - farms, forestry, the occasional farmhouse - rather than dramatic Highland scenery, but that's rather the point. It's genuine, unpretentious terrain.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace and fitness. There's no visitor centre, café, or facilities at the top - bring water. The climb itself is straightforward enough, though the final stretch can be boggy depending on recent rainfall.

If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - East Balthangie is closest at 3.6 miles - Turlundie makes a solid afternoon outing between seaside trips to Fraserburgh harbour and whatever else the area offers. It won't blow your mind, but it's a useful way to burn off some energy and get above the flatlands for a bit. Worth doing if you're in the region and have the legs for it.
