A medieval well tucked away near Uttoxeter that's more archaeological footnote than tourist spectacle - and that's precisely why it matters. St Cuthbert's Well sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of place where you need to know what you're looking at to appreciate what's in front of you. The well itself dates back centuries, connected to early Christian history and the veneration of St Cuthbert, though what survives today is modest - stone work and the hollow itself, rather than anything grand or obvious.

This is a spot for people who actually care about how people lived and worshipped in medieval England. Historians and serious walkers will find it worthwhile; casual tourists expecting a visitor centre and gift shop will be disappointed. There's no fanfare, no interpretive boards that I'm aware of, just the well and its setting. You'll need to do your homework beforehand to get the most from standing there.

The real appeal is threading it into a walk across the Staffordshire countryside. Uttoxeter's close enough that you could base yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots - Ashbourne Holidays or Field Head Farm are both within three miles - and explore the local heritage properly. Allow an hour or so if you're combining it with a wider countryside ramble. Best visited during daylight hours in decent weather, obviously. There's something to be said for places that don't shout about themselves.
