St Clements Church, Hope Cove

The little church sits right at the edge of Hope Cove village, practically on the beach. St Clement's is 14th century, which means it's watched over four centuries of fishing boats and tourists and weather. The interior is modest but genuine - low ceiling, worn stone, stained glass that catches the light properly rather than screaming for attention. What strikes you most is how it's positioned. There's barely any separation between the churchyard and the shingle, so you genuinely feel the sea's presence while you're standing inside.

It's the sort of place where history types will spend twenty minutes reading the brass plaques, but families with younger kids will whip through in five. Walkers, though - proper hikers tackling the South West Coast Path - will find it a natural pause point. The village itself is small enough that you won't feel herded about, and there's decent parking nearby. Kingsbridge is just five miles away if you need supplies or somewhere proper for lunch.

Time-wise, allow half an hour if you're genuinely interested, ten minutes if you're just dipping in between beach visits. The real value comes from combining it with the landscape - the cove is genuinely lovely, and the church grounds offer one of those unexpected quiet moments you don't get on busier stretches of coast. If you're based at Karrageen Caravan Park just down the road, or South Devon Camping at Lower Terawhiti Farm, this is practically on your doorstep. No faffing about with long drives. Worth a visit if you're in the area, though don't expect to spend hours here.
