The red sandstone tower of St Barnabas rises above Morecambe's seafront with a kind of Victorian solidity that feels proper anchored to place. This is a working parish church, not a museum piece, so you'll find it full of actual life - the smell of polish, afternoon light through stained glass, and real people going about their Sunday business.

Inside, there's decent Victorian architecture if you're into that sort of thing. The craftsmanship is straightforward rather than showy - honest stonework, some good windows, nothing that will blow your mind but plenty that rewards a slow wander. The real draw, though, is the location. You're yards from the promenade, and there's something proper restorative about stepping out of the church straight onto the seafront, especially on a clear day when you can see the Lakeland fells across the bay.

It works best if you're already in Morecambe for the beach and arcades rather than as a specific detour. Give it twenty minutes inside, then walk the front. The church is free and open during standard hours - do check ahead as these things can be unpredictable.

Those staying further out at Dovestone Holiday Park might find it a bit off the beaten track, but it's worth the extra drive if Victorian churches matter to you.
