Colloway Hill

The walk up Colloway Hill from Morecambe takes you away from the seafront sprawl and into proper Lancashire moorland. It's not a towering peak - nothing like that - but the climb is genuine enough to leave you slightly breathless, and the views back towards Morecambe Bay are worth every step up.

The fell itself is open grassland with a scattering of rocky outcrops. You'll pass old stone walls and the occasional rough track. On clear days you can pick out the fells beyond Kendal to the north, and the curve of the bay spreads out below like something from a tourism poster - though without the crowds. The summit's modest, no dramatic cairn or trig point to announce you've arrived, but that's half the appeal. It feels like proper walking rather than tourism.

This is a hike for people who want solitude and a bit of graft. Kids will manage it fine, but there's nothing to "do" at the top - no cafe, no visitor centre, just views and fresh air. Allow two to three hours return from Morecambe town centre depending on your pace and how long you linger.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts Ocean Edge is practically on the doorstep - it makes a solid afternoon out. Pack a flask and something to eat. Weather can turn quickly on the Lancashire coast, so check the forecast. Best tackled in spring or autumn when the light is good and the wind's not howling.
