St Ann's Head Lighthouse

The walk out to St Ann's Head Lighthouse is what makes it worth the trip - not the lighthouse itself, if I'm honest. It's a proper coastal trudge from the car park near Haverfordwest, and you're rewarded with views across the Bristol Channel that stretch for miles on a clear day. The red and white striped tower sits on the headland itself, and there's something quite austere about it. You won't get inside - it's still operational - but standing near it with the wind in your face and the sea crashing below is the whole point.

This one's for walkers, really. Families with small children might find the path tedious unless they're keen types. Allow a good two hours there and back if you're not rushing, longer if you want to sit and take in the views properly. The rocks around the base are dramatic, dark stone that catches the light differently depending on the time of day. Early morning or late afternoon tends to suit it better than midday.

If you're staying at Point Farm Campsite just down the road, it's an easy half-hour drive over. Beachside Glamping Dale is similarly close. Both make good bases for a day that combines coastal walks with the quieter side of Pembrokeshire. The lighthouse works well as part of a longer coastal circuit rather than a destination in itself. Time it right and you might spot seabirds wheeling over the cliffs - gannets dive-bombing the water if you're lucky.
