Sròn Odhar

The walk up Sròn Odhar rewards you properly. It's a modest peak by Highland standards - 633 metres - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a gentle stroll. Starting from near Crieff, you get proper views across Perthshire once you've made the effort, with the Trossachs spread out below and Glen Artney running north. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

This is one for walkers who know what they're after. It won't hold the attention of younger children for long, but teenagers with decent boots and stamina will find it satisfying. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. On a grey one, frankly, you're climbing through cloud and wondering why you didn't pick something closer to Crieff town centre.

The terrain is steep in places and can be boggy after rain - proper hillside stuff, not a manicured path. If you're staying at Twenty Shilling Wood or Comrie Holiday Park, both within five miles, you can do this as a proper day out without driving far. The nearby parks are well-rated, so you won't be roughing it beforehand. The climb itself takes between an hour and ninety minutes depending on your pace. Start early if the weather's on the turn - these hills can cloud over quickly.
