Squires Great Wood

Dense canopy blocks out most daylight as you follow the network of paths through this substantial woodland just outside Westcott. Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead, their thick trunks creating natural corridors that wind through the Surrey countryside.

Dog walkers will love the freedom here - plenty of space for a proper run around without worrying about traffic or livestock. The main paths are wide enough for pushchairs, though some of the smaller tracks get muddy after rain and aren't suitable for wheels.

Bird spotters should bring binoculars. I've seen green woodpeckers, nuthatches and the occasional red kite circling above the treeline. Early morning visits are best if you're after wildlife - the wood gets busier with local walkers as the day progresses.

Allow a good hour for a decent walk, longer if you want to explore the smaller trails that branch off into the deeper sections. It's free to wander, as you'd expect from woodland like this. Parking can be a bit hit and miss along the country lanes nearby.

Families staying at Surrey Hills Yurts or The Green Escape will find this a cracking spot for burning off energy before heading back to camp. Combined with nearby Henfold Lakes, it makes for a proper day out exploring the Surrey Hills without travelling far.
