Squeeze Gut Alley

Right, so Squeeze Gut Alley is exactly what it sounds like - a genuinely narrow passageway tucked away in Whitstable that'll have you turning sideways to get through. It's barely wider than your shoulders at points, which explains the rather unflattering name. The alley cuts between old buildings and feels properly atmospheric, especially on an overcast afternoon when the light gets squeezed down along with you.

It's free, naturally, and takes about two minutes to walk through - though you might pause halfway to wonder how anyone manages it when carrying shopping or pushing a pram. History types will appreciate that it's been here for centuries, a working shortcut that locals still use today rather than some sanitised tourist trap.

This isn't a destination in itself, mind you. You're looking at five minutes maximum, then you'll want to head into Whitstable proper for the oyster bars and beach. But if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Seasalter's just 2.4 miles away, or Harts a bit further out at 5.1 miles - it's absolutely worth popping in while you're in town. Throw it on the list between a chippy lunch and a wander along the seafront.

Kids find it amusing for about as long as it takes to shuffle through. Adults tend to appreciate the oddness more. Go on a quieter day if you can - summer Saturdays mean bumping shoulders with other visitors, which rather defeats the purpose.
