Whitstable Castle & Gardens

The Castle itself is a bit of a curio - built in 1834 by a local banker who'd made his fortune, it's not some medieval fortress but rather a grand Victorian villa done up in Gothic Revival style. All battlements and turrets, the kind of thing that looks absurdly theatrical from the outside but somehow works. The gardens are what draw most visitors though, spreading across proper grounds with mature trees, herbaceous borders, and enough space to feel like you've actually left town, even though central Whitstable is practically on your doorstep.

Inside, the rooms are period furnished and packed with Victorian detail - heavy drapes, oil paintings, the lot - though honestly it's the grounds you'll spend most time on. The walled gardens are pleasant enough for a wander, and families won't feel rushed; there's enough room for kids to explore without constant supervision. Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough, less if you're just after a quick look.

Stay locally at Seaview Holiday Park, just 1.8 miles away, or Seasalter Holiday Park a bit further out if you want a fuller break. The Castle works well as a half-day excursion when the weather's decent - pair it with Whitstable's seafront and the town's proper fish and chips shops, and you've got a solid day sorted.
