The woodland at Square Plantation comes as a proper surprise if you're staying around Market Drayton way. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate, so don't expect tea rooms or visitor centres - what you get instead is genuine space to wander with minimal crowds.

The main draw is a network of forest trails that wind through mixed woodland. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Walkers come here regularly because the paths are decent underfoot and there's enough variety to keep a couple of hours interesting. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main routes, though it's not going to grab their attention for a full afternoon unless they're the type who get excited about tree identification.

Being a commercial plantation, it's open to the public but fairly low-key about it. Bring a map or rely on your phone for navigation - signage is minimal. There's no entry fee that I'm aware of, and you can rock up whenever suits you. Early morning is genuinely lovely if you fancy avoiding others.
