Square Hedge Spinney

A small woodland patch just outside Northampton, Square Hedge Spinney is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while exploring the quieter corners of the county rather than plan a trip around. It's genuinely tiny - more of a proper walk-through than a destination in itself, but that's rather the point. The spinney offers a pocket of peace among the agricultural landscape, with mature trees creating decent cover and a few informal paths threading through. If you're after woodland birdsong and the smell of leaf mould underfoot, it delivers that without fuss. Kids might manage half an hour here if they're the type to spot birds or collect sticks. Serious nature enthusiasts will appreciate the quiet, though it won't match the bigger woodland reserves scattered across the region. There's nothing formal about it - no visitor centre, no marked trails - so it's very much a case of showing up and taking a wander. As a quick break during a broader Northamptonshire ramble, it works well enough. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Lakeview, Steepleton Lodge, or Bunkers Hill Farm - it's close enough for a morning potter without committing much time. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy ten minutes under the trees, but don't expect signage or facilities. This is countryside walking stripped back to basics.
