Splat Cove

The pebbles at Splat Cove are genuinely massive - not the pleasant small stones you get at most Devon beaches, but proper great chunks that crunch under your feet and make walking barefoot a non-starter. It's a sheltered little cove just south of Kingsbridge, the kind of place locals know but tourists often miss entirely, tucked away enough that you won't find crowds even in summer.

What you're doing here is basically wandering a quiet beach, scrambling over rocks, maybe paddling if the tide's out and you fancy it. The real appeal is the isolation - you get proper Devon coastline without the ice cream vans and bucket-and-spade chaos. Walkers heading through the area often stop here as a break point rather than a destination in itself, which tells you everything about what to expect.

Brings a book and settle in for an hour if you're staying nearby at Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park - it's a short drive away and makes for an easy afternoon wander. Families with young kids might find the massive pebbles tiresome, to be honest. Teenagers and actual walkers get more out of it. There's no facilities to speak of, so sort yourself out in Kingsbridge first.

Honestly? It's worth a visit if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way unless you specifically like quiet pebble beaches. On a clear day the views across the water are decent, and the peace is the real draw. Rain just makes it feel properly atmospheric.
