Walk into Spickets Wood and you're into proper Essex woodland - the sort of place where the canopy thickens around you and suddenly the flat farmland beyond feels a world away. It's a modest patch of forest east of Maldon, the kind of local spot that doesn't shout about itself but rewards a decent ramble.

There are paths threading through, good for stretching your legs without commitment. If you're with kids, the woodland floor keeps them interested for a bit - fallen logs, the general mess of nature. Adults after a proper walk might find it a touch slight compared to the bigger forests further north, though it's perfectly pleasant for a hour or so.

This works well as a break between the seaside parks clustered round here. You're only a couple of miles from Mill Beach Seaside Resort and Osea Leisure Park, so it slots in nicely if you need an afternoon off the caravan or out of the holiday cottage. The ground can get boggy after rain - sensible footwear essential.

Nearest amenities are in Maldon itself, which is worth a poke round anyway. The wood's free, no gates or nonsense, just turn up. Suits walkers wanting something low-key and local rather than people after a major expedition. Good for breaking up a family park week without driving far.
