Sparkey Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Maldon, Sparkey Wood is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and be genuinely pleased you did. It's not dramatic or particularly vast - more a working forest than a tourist trap - but that's rather the point. You get actual trees, proper undergrowth, and the kind of quiet you don't find near built-up areas.

The woodland itself is open access, so there's no gate fee or opening hours nonsense to worry about. Plan on an hour to ninety minutes if you're taking it at a leisurely pace, though you could dash through in half that if you're just after a quick leg-stretch. It's ideal for walkers who want something low-key without the crowds, and kids tend to do well here - plenty of sticks to find, trees to investigate, mud to wade through if you let them.

This works well as a breather between seaside time and whatever else you're doing in Essex. If you're camped at The Courts or staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Osea Leisure Park and Mill Beach are both within striking distance - you could easily pop here for a morning walk before heading down to the water. It's not the sort of place that'll dominate your itinerary, but paired with Maldon's high street and the Blackwater estuary walks, it slots in nicely. Wear decent footwear in winter; it can get boggy.
