Sparham Pools

The pools at Sparham are one of Norfolk's quieter water attractions, a string of interconnected lakes that sit east of Bylaugh in proper countryside. They're operational fishing spots rather than a visitor destination with facilities, so don't expect a cafe or visitor centre - this is the real thing, just water and reeds and the occasional angler.

What you're looking at is a working fishery, which means the appeal depends entirely on what you want from a few hours outdoors. Walkers will find reasonable paths around the perimeter, though the banks can get muddy after rain. Birdwatchers do well here - herons, kingfishers, the usual Norfolk water birds. If you're staying at Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite just down the road, it's genuinely worth a wander, especially in late afternoon when the light hits the water properly. Kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness kicks in, unless they're the fishing type or obsessed with spotting wildlife.

The nearest facilities are in Bylaugh itself, which is small but functional. Moat Island Glamping is closer at 5.4 miles if you're basing yourself there. Allow an hour for a loop walk, less if you're just passing through. There's no entrance fee because there's no formal entrance - it's more of a roaming spot. Go early morning in summer for the best light and fewest people. It's not spectacular, but it's the sort of place that grows on you - quiet, genuine, no nonsense.
