South Promenade

The South Promenade stretches along Blackpool's seafront like a ribbon of breathing room - and that's exactly what it is. This nature reserve runs parallel to the town's famous amusement quarter, but feels worlds away from the tower and the arcades. You get proper coastal habitat here: salt marshes, mudflats, and the kind of birdwatching that actually rewards patience.

It's the sort of place where walkers come to reset. The path runs for a decent stretch - allow an hour minimum if you're not stopping, longer if you've brought binoculars. Serious ornithologists will spend half the day here tracking waders and wildfowl, particularly in autumn and winter when migration brings scarcer species through. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on spectacle after thirty minutes unless the wildlife gods are cooperating.

Free to access, which counts for something. Best visited outside peak summer when you won't be battling the Blackpool crowds for headspace. The reserve is close enough to Haven Marton Mere Holiday Village and Manor House Glamping that you can easily slot it into a park stay without much faffing about. If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby, this is your escape valve - a proper dose of nature that reminds you why you came to the coast in the first place. Not Instagram-famous, but genuinely worth the walk.
