Smyrna Baptist Chapel, Porth y Rhyd

The little whitewashed chapel sits quietly at Porth y Rhyd, just outside Llangadog, and there's something genuinely moving about stumbling across it. Smyrna Baptist Chapel is a proper slice of rural Welsh religious life - the kind of place where you can almost hear the hymn singing still echoing off the stone walls. It's modest, unpretentious, and utterly authentic. You won't find crowds here, which is exactly the point.

Inside, there's the usual sparse chapel furniture - wooden pews worn smooth by generations, a small pulpit, and that particular smell of old stone and devotion that never really changes. But if you're based at Erwlon Caravan & Camping Park or Glynmarch Farm Camping nearby, it makes a proper afternoon walk from Llangadog. The countryside around it is lovely for rambling, and the chapel itself rewards a quiet few minutes of reflection. Historians and anyone interested in Welsh chapel culture will find it genuinely worthwhile. Families with fidgety kids might find twenty minutes enough. Go when the light's good - late afternoon suits it best. Admission appears to be free, and there's rarely anyone about, so you can take your time.
