Smart's Hill

The highest point in Hertfordshire sounds grander than it actually is, but that's rather the appeal of Smart's Hill. At just 490 metres, it's barely a hill in Alpine terms, yet the walk up from Hertford rewards you with proper views across the county - on a clear day you can see right out towards the Chilterns. The summit itself is nothing dramatic: no trig point, no café, no visitor centre. Just fields, sky, and the satisfaction of having reached the top of the county.

It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers hunting something low-key rather than showy, and families with younger legs who want a proper outing without needing mountaineering kit. The walk itself takes the best part of an hour depending on which approach you take from Hertford, making it a decent morning or afternoon venture. You'll spot the occasional rambler and the odd dog-walker, but it never feels crowded.

If you're basing yourself at one of the local parks - Church Farm Ardeley is closest at just over four miles away, or the highly-rated Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site for something more organised - Smart's Hill sits nicely into a day's explorations around the area. It's free, accessible year-round, and best tackled in autumn or spring when you won't be melting or squelching through mud. Not a lifetime memory, but a solid few hours outdoors that justifies the drive.
