Hartham Common Park

The River Lea runs through Hartham Common, and that's really the point of coming here. It's a proper nature reserve on the eastern edge of Hertford, where the water meadows flatten out and you actually get a sense of what the valley looked like before the town grew up around it. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birds - you'll spot kingfishers if you're patient, plus the usual cast of herons and cormorants working the water.

The walk itself is gentle and mostly flat, which means families with young legs and older walkers will both manage it without drama. There's a network of paths that meander through the common, though nothing particularly spectacular in terms of views - this is intimate countryside rather than sweeping vistas. You're looking at reed beds, willow scrub, and the river itself doing what rivers do.

It works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon break if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site is barely over a mile away, which makes this ideal for an easy walk before breakfast or after lunch. Lee Valley down at Dobbs Weir is further out but worth considering if you want more facilities. Allow an hour to ninety minutes here depending on how much you stop to watch the water. It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours - you just turn up. Best visited in spring when the migrants arrive, though it's worth a look any time of year if you enjoy birdwatching or just want a bit of proper wetland without the crowds.
