Panshanger Park

The River Lea winds through Panshanger Park like it owns the place, and honestly, it does. This is a proper nature reserve just outside Hertford where you can actually see what an English river valley looked like before we paved over most of it. The park covers around 100 hectares of meadow, woodland, and wetland, so there's genuine space to walk without tripping over other visitors.

What makes it work is the mix. You get riverside paths that are dead easy to follow, a bit of ancient woodland if you're after something greener, and open grassland where you might spot rabbits, deer, or if you're lucky, kingfishers along the water. The whole thing is free and feels like one of those places locals know about but most tourists miss completely. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the reserves attract waders and wildfowl depending on the season.

Families with young walkers will manage fine here; the ground's mostly firm and you can loop back whenever legs get tired. Serious birders or botanists could spend half a day cataloguing what's about. The paths are less manicured than you'd get in an urban park, which is rather the point.

It's about 20 minutes from Hertford town centre, making it excellent for breaking up a caravan stay at Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Commons Wood. Come at dawn or dusk if you want the best wildlife viewing and fewer people wandering about. Spring and early summer are the real draw - everything's moving then.
