Site of Whitchurch Castle

What remains of Whitchurch Castle is essentially a grassy mound in the middle of Cheshire - not the towering stone fortress you might imagine. It's a motte-and-bailey site, which means a Norman earthwork from around the 12th century, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of historical imagination. Stand on top and you can see why the Normans chose this spot: good vantage point, defensible ground. The actual structures are long gone, but archaeology types find it genuinely interesting.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. Kids might manage twenty minutes if they're into climbing and scrambling about on banks. If you're staying at Bramblewood Caravan Park just two miles away, or Marbury Camp & Lodge a bit further out, it's a decent excuse to stretch your legs and do something proper old. Winter's actually better than summer - fewer nettles, clearer views.

Access appears to be open at all times since there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. Allow half an hour if you're serious about it, less if you're just passing through. The site sits right in Whitchurch itself, so you can combine it with a quick look at the town's half-timbered high street without breaking your journey. It's free, obviously. Not spectacular, but for someone with even a passing interest in Norman military history, it's worth the ten-minute detour.
