Prees Heath East

Prees Heath East is a proper windswept stretch of common land on the Cheshire-Shropshire border, just outside Whitchurch. There's not much here in the way of facilities or fanfare, which is rather the point. You get open heathland, a few scattered trees, and the kind of landscape that looks like it's barely changed since the days when this was genuinely wild country.

It's the sort of place walkers stumble upon by accident and end up spending longer than expected. The heath itself is gently rolling, with decent views across the surrounding farmland. On a clear day you can see for miles, and when the light's right - early morning or late afternoon - it's genuinely lovely. The paths are well-trodden but feel remote, which takes some doing near a town the size of Whitchurch.

You won't find visitor facilities here, nor should you expect them. Bring your own provisions if you're planning a longer walk. It works best for countryside types rather than families after a structured day out, though kids with decent boot-legs will enjoy the freedom of the open ground. Allow an hour for a proper explore, more if you're combining it with walks through the surrounding villages.

If you're based at Bramblewood Caravan Park - just a few minutes away - this makes an easy morning outing. The bigger parks like Marbury or Hawk Lake are within striking distance too, so it could slot into a wider rambling holiday nicely. Go when the weather's decent; muddy days reveal why locals call this heathland rather than parkland.
