Site of Historic Mansion

The foundations of an old mansion lie scattered across this Devon site near Kingsbridge, telling the story of a building that's long since crumbled to earth. What remains are stone footings, broken walls, and the odd bit of worked masonry poking through the grass - the sort of place that rewards a slow wander with a decent local map and maybe an archaeology book tucked under your arm.

It's not a polished visitor attraction with interpretation boards and a gift shop. Instead, you get to do the detective work yourself, picking through what's left and imagining the house as it stood centuries ago. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on your temperament. History enthusiasts with patience will find it genuinely absorbing. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking what's for lunch.

The walk out is pleasant enough, with decent South Devon views if you pick the right approach. Allow an hour or so if you're not in a rush, less if you just want the photographs. There's no entrance fee, no set opening hours - you rock up when you fancy it.

If you're camped at Karrageen or South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm, both within a couple of miles, this makes an interesting half-day outing to break up the holiday routine. It won't dominate your week, but it's the sort of spot that sticks in your memory more than you'd expect.
