Sir John Barrow Monument

A limestone obelisk rises from the fell above Grange-over-Sands, marking the birthplace of Sir John Barrow, the 19th-century Arctic explorer and Admiralty administrator. The monument itself is modest - you won't linger long at the stone - but the walk up rewards you with views across Morecambe Bay that genuinely take your breath away on a clear day.

Getting there means leaving the caravan parks behind and heading into proper fell country. It's a decent hike from Grange-over-Sands, steep in places, so not one for young children or anyone who prefers a gentle stroll. But if you're the type who gravitates toward coastal walks and has already done the circuit of nearby lakes, this offers something different - windswept, slightly wild, and genuinely historical rather than themed.

The monument tells you something about Victorian heroes the modern world has largely forgotten, which appeals to history types more than casual visitors. Allow two to three hours including the walk itself. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so pack water. Free admission, obviously - you're just climbing a fell.

Stay at any of the parks within five miles - Old Park Wood Caravan Holiday Park or Haven Lakeland Leisure Park both work as bases - and pair this with walks around the bay itself or the Victorian charms of Grange-over-Sands itself. The town's proper retro, which some love and others find a bit worn. Worth the detour if you're into walking and don't mind a bit of effort for a view.
