Simpson sits quietly in the Surrey countryside near Tadworth, one of those historical spots that doesn't shout about itself. It's a proper piece of local heritage - the kind of place where you'll find traces of how people actually lived in this corner of the South East, rather than grand estates or famous battlefields.

The site itself rewards a slow wander. You get a genuine sense of continuity here, walking ground that's mattered to people for centuries. It's not a theme park version of history - there's no gift shop, no staged recreations. Just the real thing, which some find far more compelling than polished attractions.

Walkers will appreciate it most. The surrounding landscape around Tadworth lends itself to exploration, and Simpson fits naturally into a longer ramble through Surrey Hills National Landscape just a few miles on. If you're camping at Surrey Hills Park or Merrywood Park - both within easy reach - you could easily slot a couple of hours here into a day's walking without it feeling like a detour.

Families with older kids interested in history will get something out of it. Younger children might struggle to engage without more scaffolding though - there's not much interactive here, which is either its charm or its limitation depending on what you're after.

It's the kind of place that works best when you're already in the area for something else. Don't drive here specially. But if you're staying locally and fancy proper countryside history away from the tourist circuits, Simpson's well worth an hour of your time.
