The Mound

The Mound sits just outside Tadworth and gives you a proper vantage point across the Surrey Hills. It's not a dramatic peak - more a substantial rise that locals have made the most of over centuries. The walk up takes about twenty minutes depending on your fitness, and it's a good one for clearing the head without needing hiking boots.

From the top you get views that stretch across the rolling landscape, though I'll be honest - it's not going to take your breath away if you've seen chalk downland before. What makes it worth the trip is the quietness. You won't find crowds here like you might at more famous viewpoints, and on a clear day the perspective across the Surrey Hills National Landscape five miles away really does make sense once you're standing there.

It's ideal for families who want a modest walk with a tangible reward, and walkers using the nearby park network will pass through naturally. The closest option is Surrey Hills Park at four miles out, though Norbury Park at 4.7 miles offers more substantial grounds if you're planning a longer day. Chessington World of Adventures Resort is only 4.2 miles if you're mixing outdoor time with theme park visits.

Allow an hour round trip including time at the top. No facilities up there, so bring water. Best visited in autumn or winter when the air's clear and the trees let more light through. Summer can feel a bit shut-in with foliage. Free to access and worth fitting in if you're staying locally.
