Simon's Knowe

The walk up Simon's Knowe near Moffat is brisk, honest work - nothing too technical, but the climb asks something of your legs. It's a proper fell rather than a mountain, rising sharply from the surrounding moorland with views that stretch across Dumfries and Galloway when the weather cooperates. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a drizzly one, which is roughly half the time, you're wrapped in cloud and squinting at the heather a few metres away.

Allow two hours for the round trip if you're at a decent pace. This isn't a destination for dawdling - the path is straightforward enough and the summit offers a cairn and not much else. That said, it's exactly the sort of fell that rewards the effort without demanding scrambling or technical kit. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might struggle with the sustained gradient.

Go in late spring or early autumn. Summer can bring midges that'll drive you daft, and winter turns the approach boggy and miserable. The walk works well as part of a larger Moffat area circuit - you're only a few miles from Howslack Farm caravan site, which is a solid base for exploring the Southern Uplands. It's the type of walk that feels purposeful without being brutal, and it's genuinely free - no car park fees, no rangers collecting donations. Worth fitting in if you're already in the region, though not worth planning a whole trip around.
