Silver Rock

The walk up Silver Rock isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for it. From Dornoch, you're looking at a proper climb through rough moorland terrain - nothing technical, just relentless uphill. The cairn at the summit sits around 500 metres, and on a clear day the views across the Dornoch Firth and towards the north coast are genuinely stunning. You get sweeping views of the surrounding Highland landscape that make the huffing and puffing worthwhile.

This is squarely a walkers' thing. If your lot enjoys a brisk hill walk with proper scenery at the end, they'll rate it. Kids who are happy to hike will find it manageable - allow a couple of hours return from the trailhead. Families after a gentler stroll might find the ascent a bit relentless for their purposes.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities, just the hill itself. Go when the weather's cooperating; fog rolls in quickly in the Highlands and you'll see nothing but mist. Spring through early autumn is your window.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame just outside Dornoch, Silver Rock makes a solid morning or afternoon expedition. It's close enough not to eat up your whole day, and gives you that sense of proper achievement that makes a holiday feel active rather than lazy. The Dornoch coastline itself is worth exploring too - quieter than further south and genuinely appealing.
