Embo Beach Access

The beach at Embo is one of those stretches of Scottish coast that rewards you for actually getting out of the car. It's a proper wild beach - golden sand, rock pools if you're lucky with the tide, and views across the Dornoch Firth that make you understand why people bother with the Highlands at all.

You'll find it just outside Dornoch, which is handy because the town itself has good cafes and a proper golf course if that's your thing. The access is straightforward enough, though the car park is small and gets rammed in summer. Arrive early or go off-season.

It's brilliant for families with young kids - shallow enough in places, rock pools to explore, and the beach is long enough that you won't feel crowded even when it's busy. Walkers get their money's worth too. The sand is firm, the walking is easy, and there's something satisfying about following the coastline north towards Tarbat Ness. Budget two to three hours if you're doing anything more than a quick paddle.

Stay at Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park and you're basically on the doorstep - less than five minutes' drive. Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park is another solid option a bit further out but still close enough for a morning beach session before breakfast. The beach is free, naturally. Go when the weather's decent but don't wait for perfect - Scottish coast rarely obliges.
