Mound Rock

The walk up Mound Rock isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn your breath back. This rocky outcrop sits just outside Dornoch in the northern Highlands, commanding proper views across the Dornoch Firth and the surrounding moorland. On a clear day the panorama stretches for miles - you can see why locals bother with it.

It's a straightforward hike, maybe forty minutes up if you're not rushing. The path is well-trodden and the summit rewards you with a cairn and the kind of 360-degree vista that makes you understand why people live here despite the weather. The rock itself is nothing fancy - no dramatic pinnacles or geological drama - but the exposure and the views across to the mountains beyond make it worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those staying at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park or Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park - both within easy driving distance. It's the sort of thing you do on a decent morning before heading into Dornoch town itself for lunch. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the ascent a bit much for the time involved.

Free to access, naturally. Allow an hour and a half return if you're not striding. The exposure can be proper blustery, so pick a calm day if you can. It's not a destination in itself, but paired with exploring the Dornoch coast or the wider Sutherland countryside, it's absolutely worth the short detour.
