Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve (Ferry Rd Car Park)

The car park at Ferry Road gives you direct access to one of the Highlands' best-kept stretches of coastline. Loch Fleet itself is a sea loch - proper tidal waters that back up behind a shingle bar - and it's teeming with wading birds, particularly in autumn and winter when thousands of them stage here during migration. The reserve encompasses salt marsh, mudflats, and the woodland on either bank, making it genuinely worth an hour or two if you've got binoculars and patience.

Walkers will find decent footpaths threading along the foreshore. The going is straightforward, mostly level, and you're never far from the water. Birdwatchers should arrive early morning or at dusk when things get active - bring a decent scope if you're serious. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in, unless they're into spotting oystercatchers and greenshanks. The views across to Dornoch are pleasant rather than dramatic.

It's free to access, naturally, and there's no formal visitor centre - just the car park and the paths. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly. Pair it with a walk round Dornoch itself or the golf courses if you want a fuller day.
