Shrewsbury Castle

The Norman motte and bailey rises abruptly from the River Severn's loop, its red sandstone walls catching the afternoon light in a way that makes you understand why the Normans chose this spot. Shrewsbury Castle commands the town centre, and you can't miss it if you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Oxon Hall or Love2Stay are both under three miles away, making it an easy visit between longer days out.

What you're actually looking at is over nine centuries of defensive architecture. The castle switched hands repeatedly during the English Civil War, which left its mark. The grounds themselves are free to wander, and there's a proper sense of history walking the ramparts, though the structure feels less imposing once you're up close than it does from a distance. The castle now houses a museum covering local history, which varies depending on what exhibitions are running.

Plan on an hour if you're just poking around the exterior and grounds. History enthusiasts who want to explore the museum should add another hour. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there are no dramatic dungeons or interactive displays jumping out at you, just solid stone and views down to the Severn.

It works well as part of a wider Shrewsbury walk rather than a standalone destination. The town itself has plenty of Tudor buildings and decent pubs within a few minutes' stroll. If you're based at Condover Park or Stoney Acres further out, the castle makes a decent half-day excursion into town.
