Sherfield Duck Pond

The pond sits quietly on the edge of Sherfield, just a short drive from Reading, and it's the kind of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick look. Waterfowl, reeds, and open water - nothing flashy, but genuinely peaceful. You'll spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer visitors that pass through. It's a proper nature reserve, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

Birds are the main draw here. Walkers and amateur ornithologists will spend a satisfying hour pottering about. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's not much playground infrastructure, and children will get restless after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on spotting things. The paths are manageable, though it can get muddy in winter.

It works well as a gentle morning outing if you're staying at Wellington Country Park or Ravenswing Park nearby. Neither park is far away, so you could easily tack a duck pond visit onto a longer weekend without eating up much driving time. Admission appears to be free, which is always a bonus. Go early if you want the best wildlife viewing - the water's busier in early morning and late afternoon. It's not a destination in itself, but as a quiet spot to stretch your legs and clear your head during a Hampshire break, it does the job.
