New Wood

New Wood is a proper garden on the outskirts of Wokingham, just a short drive from Reading. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed visit - think woodland paths threading through mature trees, with seasonal plantings that actually look like someone cares about them rather than a corporate tick-box exercise.

The garden works well if you're the type who likes rambling through shade and quiet rather than gawping at showpiece borders. Families with younger kids might find it a bit lacking in the petting-zoo energy they'd get at Wellington Country Park just down the road, but older children and adults who enjoy woodland walks will get genuine peace here. It's low-key, which is either its greatest strength or a reason to skip it depending on what you're after.

Timing-wise, spring brings the best light through the canopy, though autumn is stunning if you catch the colour. You'll want a couple of hours minimum to do it justice without feeling rushed. The garden is free to access, which is a nice bonus.

If you're based at California Chalet or Wellington Country Park, New Wood makes an excellent half-morning detour before heading back for lunch. It's close enough to Reading that you could combine it with town browsing if the weather turns grim, but honestly it's best enjoyed on a clear day when you can actually appreciate the tree canopy.
