Shaw's Community Woodland

The woodland paths at Shaw's cut through proper mature trees and open glades just outside Swansea - the sort of place where you actually see things moving between the branches rather than just walking through a manicured green space. It's a genuine community woodland, which means it feels lived-in and cared for rather than corporate-managed.

You'll find yourself on well-maintained trails that loop through different habitats. Birders should bring binoculars - there's decent variety here depending on season. Kids won't get bored if they're the sort who like poking about in undergrowth and spotting wildlife, though it's not a theme park, so don't expect play equipment or facilities. The walk takes anything from 30 minutes to two hours depending on which trails you pick.

It works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Llanrhidian Holiday Park is only five miles away, and Three Cliffs Bay (honestly brilliant for a longer stay) is barely further. Head here in spring or early summer when the woodland's alive with birds and insects. Winter's quieter but you'll see the structure of the place better.

Free to access, which is the main thing. There's genuine value in having old-growth woodland this close to town without the usual tourist machinery around it. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
