The walk up Sharpitor rewards you with views that stretch across Dartmoor in all directions - moorland rolling away until it meets the horizon. It's not a massive peak, but that's partly what makes it good. You're not exhausted by the time you reach the top, which means you can actually stand there and take it in rather than collapsing against a cairn.

From Tavistock, it's an easy drive onto the moor, and the route itself is straightforward enough for most fitness levels - moorland paths that are well-trodden but not relentlessly steep. Allow two hours there and back if you're ambling, less if you're moving. The views change depending on weather and time of day. Clear morning light is magnificent; afternoon clouds can roll in fast and blanket everything, which is equally atmospheric if you like that sort of thing.

Families with older kids will find it satisfying - not too technical, manageable time commitment, and the kind of space where children can actually run about without constant hand-holding. Younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit sparse if they're expecting woodland adventure. Serious hikers often treat it as part of a longer Dartmoor circuit rather than a destination in itself.
