Rolling vineyard slopes overlooking the River Dart - Sharpham is one of those places that makes you wonder why you haven't been before. Set just outside Totnes, this working estate combines wine production with a serious cheese operation, and you can actually see both happening when you visit.

The vineyard itself stretches across proper south-facing hillside, the kind of exposure that actually works for English wine. The cheeses are made on-site too, so there's a real sense of something genuinely local being produced here rather than just packaged up elsewhere. Tours tend to run through both operations, though you'll want to ring ahead about times and whether you need to book. The shop is worth lingering in - local wine, cheese you've watched being made, the usual farm shop bits.

This works best for adults who actually care about wine or food - kids will get bored fairly quickly unless they're the sort who find process fascinating. The views across the valley are genuinely lovely, and it's a decent walk around the grounds if you want one. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a tour and lingering over lunch.

If you're camping nearby - Ramslade is barely a mile and a half away, or Whitehill Country Park just over two miles - this makes an excellent half-day stop that feels more substantial than it first appears. It slots well into a broader tour of the Totnes area without feeling like you're going far out of your way.
