Shakerley Mere

A proper shallow lake that sits just outside Knutsford, Shakerley Mere is the sort of spot locals know and tourists often miss. It's small - you can walk round it in under an hour - but the water's clean enough for a decent look at waterfowl, and the banks are pleasant if unremarkable. There's no café, no visitor centre, no faffing about. Just a lake, some trees, and enough space to let the kids burn off energy without worrying they'll run into anything.

It's best in spring and autumn when the birds are moving through. Winter floods it regularly, which adds character but limits access. Summer can feel a bit underwhelming if you're after dramatic scenery - it's flat Cheshire, after all. The path around the perimeter is muddy after rain and can be boggy in places, so proper footwear matters.

Families with young walkers will get a good hour out of it. Bird watchers might linger longer with binoculars. The main draw is its closeness to Knutsford town centre - you're talking minutes from the high street - which makes it a useful leg-stretch if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Woodlands Park or Greenfields Campsite.

Admission appears free and there are no formal opening hours to worry about, though it's definitely a dawn-to-dusk sort of place. Don't expect facilities beyond what nature provides.
