Newplatt Wood

A proper woodland walk through Cheshire countryside, Newplatt Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan around. Thick stands of mature trees create natural shelter, and the forest floor gets boggy in places - so wellies aren't a bad shout if you've had rain. It's small enough that you won't spend hours here, but substantial enough to feel like an actual escape from Knutsford's suburban edges.

This works best for families wanting a quick leg-stretch or walkers combining it with other local routes. Kids aged five upwards will enjoy it without losing interest halfway through. The paths are manageable, though muddy sections mean it's less suitable for buggies. There's nothing dramatic here - no waterfalls, no ancient monuments - just honest woodland with decent footfall that keeps the routes clear.

Allow an hour maximum, or thirty minutes if you're just doing a loop. It costs nothing to enter and there's no obvious visitor centre or facilities, so bring a packed snack if you're making an afternoon of it. The real value is its location near Knutsford, where Woodlands Park sits just half a mile away - ideal if you're staying at one of the area's caravan parks. Royal Vale is barely a mile further on.

Go in autumn when the leaf cover creates that cathedral-like light through the canopy, or spring when the understory brightens up. Summer can feel claustrophobic with all the foliage close in. Not life-changing, but a solid twenty-minute diversion if you're in the area.
