Sgùman Mòr

Getting to the summit of Sgùman Mòr involves a proper hill walk - nothing too technical, but it's a committed push from the car. The views across the Highlands are the real draw here, sweeping panoramas that stretch for miles on a clear day. On my visit the cloud was low, which meant the walk felt more atmospheric than spectacular, though it did give the whole thing a slightly moody appeal.

This is a serious hill rather than a casual stroll, so it works best for walkers with decent fitness and a couple of hours to spare. The terrain's rough in places and navigation matters if visibility drops, so an OS map or decent GPS app is essential. Families with young kids will find it steep and potentially frustrating. For hill enthusiasts staying near Inverness, it's a cracking spot that doesn't pull the crowds of the more famous peaks.

The walk is free and there's basic parking at the trailhead. Allow three to four hours return depending on your pace. Spring and summer offer the longest daylight hours, though autumn can be stunning if the weather plays ball. If you're staying at Tomatin Glamping Pods just down the road, you can knock this out before breakfast without needing to drive far. The pods themselves are excellent - proper comfort after a day on the hill.
