Sewards End Hill

The walk up Sewards End Hill rewards you with proper views across the Essex countryside - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see well beyond Saffron Walden towards the rolling farmland that makes this corner of East Anglia worth a detour. It's not a mountain. At around 200 metres, it's more a determined rise through fields than a proper peak, but that's rather the point. You get genuine views without needing fell boots or a packed rope.

The climb takes twenty minutes or so from the nearby village, and it's the kind of walk that works well with kids who are past the "carry me" stage but not yet teenagers eyeing their phones. There's something to be said for a modest hill that doesn't demand a full day's commitment.

Go in late afternoon when the light's proper golden and the slopes are in shadow. Early morning's good too if you want solitude, though there's rarely a crowd up here anyway. The walk is free - it's just a field path with no gates or keepers. Wear decent footwear; after rain the path gets boggy and the gradient catches you out if you're not paying attention.
