The Iron Age settlements scattered across the hillsides near Caernarfon offer proper archaeology without the visitor centre crowds. You're looking at ancient Welsh communities - defensive structures, roundhouses, field systems - spread across the Gwynedd landscape where people actually lived two thousand years ago.

What makes these sites work is the walking. They're not cordoned off behind fences. You'll find yourself on decent hillside paths between Caernarfon and the Snowdonia foothills, spotting earthworks and stone circles that blend into the moorland. It takes effort to read them - there's no interpretation board at every turn - but that's rather the point. This is archaeology for people who want to do the detective work themselves.

History types will spend half a day here easily. Families with younger kids might struggle with the distance and the interpretive challenge; older children who've done a bit of Iron Age history at school will get more from it. Serious walkers treating it as part of a longer Gwynedd ramble will find it genuinely rewarding.

No entry fees that I can establish, and no set hours, which means you can plan around the weather. Allow two to three hours to see several settlements properly. Go when it's dry; the paths get boggy fast after rain.
