Sergeant's Crag

The walk up Sergeant's Crag takes about forty minutes from the Catbells trailhead, and it's one of those Lakeland peaks that rewards you without demanding a full day's commitment. You're looking at a modest 1,585 metres, which means decent views across Derwent Water without the slog of the bigger fells. The fell itself is bracken and grass underfoot, straightforward enough even in soft ground, and the summit cairn sits nicely - proper little vantage point looking north towards Skiddaw and south back down the valley towards Ambleside.

It's ideal for families who've camped at Great Langdale Campsite or Great Langdale Glamping and want a half-day outing that won't result in blistered heels and complaints. Keen walkers often link it with Catbells as a loop, which extends the experience and gives you something more substantial. The ascent is fairly steep in places - nothing technical, but steady enough to get the heart working. Descent's gentler, which is always nice when calves are already tired.

Go early or mid-week if you can. Summer weekends pull crowds because Catbells is well-known, and the narrow bits get fiddly. The views are clearest on settled spring or autumn days; winter can be proper grim if there's cloud. Allow ninety minutes to two hours round trip if you're ambling and stopping for the view. Free to climb, obviously - this is fellwalking, not a theme park. It's not a "must-do" if you're only passing through, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're staying at any of the Great Langdale sites.
