Selby Abbey

The massive Perpendicular Gothic nave hits you first - soaring stone columns that make you crane your neck just to take it all in. Selby Abbey sits right in the town centre, and it's genuinely one of the finest parish churches in England, despite having lost its monastic buildings centuries ago.

What you're looking at is the 12th-century foundation stone, though most of what stands now is from the 13th and 15th centuries. The stained glass is excellent, particularly the newer work, and the sheer scale of the interior space is what gets people. You can walk around at your own pace, take it all in from the pews, and there's usually someone about who knows the history if you want the proper stories.

It's free to enter, and you'll need a good hour if you're actually looking rather than just passing through. History enthusiasts will spend longer; families with restless kids might find 45 minutes enough. The town of Selby itself is compact and walkable, which helps.
