Seaton Sluice Harbour

The tidal sluice gates that give this place its name are long gone, but Seaton Sluice Harbour itself remains a proper working fishing village with actual character. You've got the narrow channel cutting through to the sea, fishing boats bobbing about, and a scattering of old stone cottages that actually look lived-in rather than turned into gastropubs.

Walk along the quayside and you'll spot the working fishermen doing their thing - this isn't a polished tourist attraction, it's a genuine working harbour. The water's usually busy with small boats, and there's something satisfying about watching it all function without pretence. The beach either side is reasonable enough for a paddle, though nothing remarkable.

Families with younger kids will find it keeps them entertained for an hour or so - there's space to run about, rock pools to poke at, and the boats hold their attention. Walkers get more value from it as a stop on a coastal route rather than a destination in itself. History types might appreciate the industrial heritage angle, though there's not much interpretation on site.

It's genuinely free to wander about, no gates or charges. Allow an hour if you're stopping briefly, two if you're doing the surrounding walks. Go when the tide's in - at low water it's just mudflats and less interesting. If you're based at Sandy Bay Holiday Park near Whitley Bay, it's only six miles up the coast and makes for a straightforward morning outing. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't plan a day around it.
