Seathow Wood

The woodland around Seathow, just outside Keswick, is proper Lake District - all ancient oaks and dark conifers pressing in on either side of the path. It's the sort of place where the light gets soft and green, and you can hear the becks running before you see them. The walks here are straightforward and well-maintained, threading through mature forest that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from town.

You'll want to allow a couple of hours to do it justice. There's no charge for access, and no specific visitor facilities to speak of - it's working woodland rather than a manicured tourist attraction. Families with younger walkers might find it less demanding than some of the ridge walks the area's known for, though the ground can be muddy after rain. It's also genuinely good for photography types, if you're after moody forest shots with proper depth to the treeline.

For a week based at one of the caravan parks round Keswick - Castlerigg Hall or Whinfell Hall Farm are both within striking distance - Seathow Wood works as a morning walk before heading up to the bigger attractions. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why people actually move to the Lakes rather than just holiday here. The air's different in old woodland. Worth combining with a visit to Keswick town itself for the proper visitor experience.
